By Mary Ann Campbell Action on starting the refuse pickup will be taken NORTH ORLANDO — June 3, at the regular Although no action was council meeting. taken, it appears North Orlando will go into the refuse business.Council has been weighing the pros and cons of providing this ser- vice, and the majority of the council appeared in fagot of starting refuse collection when the present contract with C&M Refuse expires June 30. Councilman Charles E. Rowell stated income from billing for refuse service could be estimated at $500 a Month. Expenses would be $300 a month for salary; $109 per month for repairs, maintenance and gas; $15 monthly for use of the county dump; $15 a month for billing expense; and an estimated figure of $20 a month for insurance costs. IT WAS said a man was willing to take the job at the above salary and that his duties would also include village maintenance and road work. Council ap- proved purchase of a ton- and-ahalf dump truck for $500 from the road and bridge fund for "mainte- nance and upkeep of vil- lage streets." It can be assumed when this vehicle is not in use for road repair, thei council will use it for refuse service, if they ap- prove starling the service. Village Attorney Thomas Freeman pointed out to council that providing-this service could present many legal problems as well as problems with collection of bills, promptness of set-- vice, insurance, bookkeep- 3:_-s . ing, workmants compensa- tion and upkeep. nn - W WC AQom W _ •T m v'.12 :0 ,, 04Opo o • /q T ry 0.g W G c0 o • wDco mUDO ° 7aw i_i5 .g. ::7 o0 o. wd i ' POaa ° Ev ES ioc,n i`W'3 ^ H. _.j 3 a°i d'.,° < ;o jp°° n°o o D : - C ° m v a 4 <.O 33 3 _ 933 VI • _ Dx o " ' w O a w Da o 40 -19 9 n m a e„ ` am ' mC 3a< - 7: < r o a s a a 3 w n 5 •n m < a F o. 0 • `° ma . 1 a >< a = Q3 =, F 4 . N f 09 o- ° T u .3.. m4 Oa 'e W .Ti. m W O n On jr rt 0 '0 N • 0 C 0. m • a °. June 6 council meeting. Macek said he terminated the service after reading the "fantastic" reports of dissatisfied customers. "I was willing to forfeit my $250 cash bond and let the council care for the citizens' garbage for the remaining six weeks," Macek said. HE ADDED: "I had not serviced North Orlando on Friday and would not have come hack on Saturday had it not been for the overwhelming reports and phone calls from the 90 per cent plus satisfied customers." The reports of dissatisfied custom- ers came from a village council survey which drew 66 reponses from 271 homes polled. Of the replies, 39 expressed dissatisfaction. Macek criticized the council for announcing the survey only 30 days prior to the expiration of his contract. He said that on expiration he has a right of renewal on 30 days written notice. Macek's contract expires June 30. MACEK SAID he conducted his own survey and received only six complaints, three of which could have been solved promptly with an earlier telephone call. The other three complaints weren't signed, Macek said.
