Rare is the day when there is not a story about another business making layoffs of from a handful to hundreds of employees . As local business people, how can we avoid these actions that are tough on employees and on the managers who must take them? Here are some business improvement ideas that I 've come across lately. Reengineering the organization is becoming quite popular . Ask your customers to define what they expect from you. Then imagine your business as a clean sheet of paper. Rebuild it to deliver just what your customers want . You' ll probably discover you are doing a lot of things that are not meeting the needs of your customers . This lets you refocus on what counts , and to staff according to what must be accomplished. Inc . magazine suggests you reengineer as soon as your management team cannot sit together around one conference table. Team up with your vendors . By reducing the number of different vendors or suppliers you buy from, you are in a better position to develop an alliance that helps you both. Committing to higher purchase volumes encourages the supplier to lower the price. The vendor is assured of higher sales to you, and may be more likely to agree to a just-in-time inventory system that lets you reduce the expense of maintaining a large costly inventory . Cross-training is another way to improve your business and maximize the productivity of your staff . Many businesses are discovering the flexibility of employing "generalists who can do the lion' s share of what needs to be done . These generalists are cross-trained to perform many tasks , covering for other staff on vacation or out sick without the need to slow production or hire contract staff . In this day and age, be creative. Look for new ways to do things . Follow the philosophy expressed by one of my favorite books ; "if it ain' t broke, break it" .
