SATURDAY— FEBRUARY 24th — 2:00 P.M.
WINTER SPRINGS CIVIC CENTER
Bring your friends and your memories and share them on Saturday, February 24th starting at
2:00 P.M. at the Winter Springs Civic Center. We will gather in small groups of 4-6 and
attempt to record what everyone has to share of their memories of Winter Springs. The tapes
will then be transcribed so we have a permanent hard copy of this special day of remembering.
Please urge anyone who would enjoy this meeting to come and offer them a ride to what
promises to be a memorable afternoon.
NEEDED FOR MEETING: Tape recorders, tapes. Call John.
MIDGET TOWN: At our first meeting in June the subject of Midget Town came up. After this
meeting Rae Artman reported to John Baker about "Midget City." She'd been talking with Elda
Nichols,a long-time resident,about the Society's meeting. Elda remembered "Midget City"as
sort of a small "attraction" (on 17-92 somewhere between 434 and 419) when she moved here in
1954, five years before the Village of North Orlando was chartered. It was not here in 1968
when the Artmans moved here.
A miniature village was Laid out in what Elda remembers as a "big sandbox." The buildings of
the village were about five inches high. visitors were given a folder which included a map of the
village. The site, Elda recalls, was barren and without trees; she remembered how hot it was
when she visited.
There were articles about Midget City in both the Orlando Sentinel and the Sanford Herald.

ACQUISITIONS SINCE THE SOCIETY"S SEPTEMBER 28th MEETING
+ We continue to teveive each issue of the Black Hammock News through the
courtesy of its editor, Peggy Powell. You'll recall that our September
speaker, Robert King, lives in Black Hammock. Although the unincorporated
community is not a part of Winter Springs, it is on the shore of Lake Jesup,
- -just east of our eastern city line. News articles often refer to the city
since their concerns frequently coincide width ours. John Baker has recent
issues if you'd like to peruse them; older issues are in storage.
+ From the city's Department of Public Works, courtesy of City Manager John
Govoruhk, we are now the proud possessors of an elegant, heavy-duty
aluminum, railroad crossing sign. It's the one that stood at the crossing
on Vistawilla Drive and was installed there in about 1989. The reflecting
sign measures about 40" x 30". Since the society's president was not
allowed to bring it into his own home, it is now in storage.

+ Too society members, with encouragement from a third, gathered for the
society a track plate*, a plate clip*, and a large/long screw* (use unknown) ,
and 102 spikes from the track bed of the railroad that until recently
paralleled SR 434/419. The original line was laid long before North Orlando
was chartered as a village in 1959. If there's a railroad enthusiast among
our members, this would be a good topic for research; John Baker could get
you started. (The asterisks (*) indicated that Baker doesn't know the
correct names for the items.)
A local resident dropped off some things to John Baker, including a Grand Opening ceramic
coffee cup from the first McDonal's to open in Winter Springs in October, 1994.
George Barkus has given us a complete set of the Tuskawilla newsletter. This is a valuable
addition to our historical archives.
Bill Daucher,a founder of the local Sertoma group, contributed two scrapbooks, display boards
and other material. Sunshine Park was totally refurbished because of this group and the
contributions shed light on the period from 1977 to 1983.
If you have anything you want to contribute please contact John or anyone else listed below and
it will be picked up and added to our collection.
Keep your eyes and ears open for any house or building that would be appropriate for displaying
our growing collection. In the meantime we sure could use a free place(room, part of a garage,
loft, unused closet)to store our collection.
