The founding meeting of the Winter
tSpSprings
seHHistorical
E Society
was held June 8 , 1995, at 7 : 30 p.m. at
tary school with John Baker presiding.
John Baker explained that he had invited more than 30 people
with whom he had previously talked and who had expressed an interest
in Winter Springs ' history. Of the 22 who said they would attend,
17 (in addition to himself) were present. He also explained that
he had not invited any current or recent city employee or elected
city official ; he also did not invite any news reporters. While
he noted there are many in these groups who are interested in
preserving the city' s history, he hoped to assure that founding
members would in no way feel constrained in expressing their ideas
or opinions.
Each person present stood and introuced himself or herself .
The objective of the meeting was to plan for the future of
"an effective historical organization" for the City of Winter
Springs .
After considering several possibilities , it was agreed the
organization will be known as the Winter Springs Historical Society.
Officers for the year June 8 , 1995 , through June 8 , 1996 ,
were elected. They are:
President - John Baker
Vice-president - Louise Baskin
Secretary - Annette Boyd
Treasurer - Chuck Holzman
Following are the results of discussions about Society projects:
Bill Drummond will investigate non-profit organization status
and tax regulations .
There was discussion about insuring artifacts and furniture
in the historical storeroom. Etta Harville will investigate
insurance possibilities .
Clippings are needed from the Orlando Sentinel and Oviedond
Voice. It was suggested that perhaps an older,
person would do this . Neil Backus volunteered to seek such
a person.
Virginia DelVillaggio will check the Sanford Herald archives
for past history of Winter Springs.
Many Norton volunteered to mount and organize Neil
Backus offered to pay for photocopying

Raising funds is not crucial at this time, but will be in
the future.
In conducting "living history" interviews , people should be
interviewed that have lived in Winter Springs a long time.
Bill Drummond said he would do an interview.
In answer to a question about interviews and clippings , John
Baker noted that information should be available if someone
wants to look into some subject in depth. He also noted
that artifacts should be displayed with a caption. Neil
Backus suggested putting information on a CD ROM.
Louise Baskin suggested getting high school students involved
in taking pictures of the local area.
While it was suggested that we get the new high school
students to design a logo for the Society, Pat DelVillaggio
agreed to start working on a logo now.
Bill Drummond agreed to look into a back-up place to store
historical artifacts and furniture .
People welcoming visitors at the museum will be on a rotating
basis (e.g. one day a week) . Mary Norton and Virginia
DelVillaggio volunteered to do this .
It was suggested that we try to involve students from our
middle and high schools, possibly in studying and writing
about Winter Springs ' history.
John Baker suggested the Society logo show the North Orlando
Company' s office building . Copies of artifacts and T-shirts
with the logo could be sold.
All those in attendance were urged to be on the lookout for
(1) information about "Midget City" and (2) donors of artifacts.
It was agreed that membership for the Historical Society will
be on an individual basis with dues being $5 . 00 for one year.
Later some check-off procedure might be instituted.
Minutes of this meeting of the Society will be typed and
sent to founding members who attended the June 8 , 1995 , meeting.
The next meeting of the Society will be on September 28 , 1995 ,
at a place to be determined. The meeting will be announced and
open to the public.
Virginia DelVillaggio offerd to give the Society a tape
recorder. Bruce Coxe offered to provide some tapes .

John Baker distributed copies of a Memorandum on Aquisition
that gave, to the Society, all the historical items, objects, and
materials currently housed in the historical storeroom. He
included in this gift all the pieces of furniture that were his . .
to give. Louise Baskin, Vice-president, accepted the gift for the
Society.
The meeting was adjourned at 9 : 20 p.m.
Those in attendance were invited to visit the historical
storeroom after the meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
