WINTER SPRINGS — City commissioners will
hold a special workshop tonight to discuss district-
ing, a procedure whereby elected officials repre-
sent a specific area.
The 7:30 p.m. meeting comes several months
after commissioners refused to let voters decide on
the issue. Although the charter revision commis-
sion recommended districting as one of the revi-
sions in the charter, commissioners shot down the
idea before it was placed on the ballot.
Now however, Commissioner Jim Hartman says
things are different.
"I think the time for districting has come," said
. Hartman, who requested that the special workshop
be held. And what I'm proposing is five districts in
which the councilman would have to live. I think
they should run for office at-large, but they would
have to live in their district."
Hartman said he believes the council will follow
his plan.
"I think there has been a change in the attitude
of the council," added Hartman, who is one of
three commissioners up for re-election later this
year. "I think that while they were against it before,
they would lean toward it now."
