'Phil will help coordinate the campaign in the greater Oviedo area
and will set up committees of citizens from Oviedo, Winter Springs,
Volusia, to give advice and be in constant communication with me
after the election;Tom Feeney said at his press conference Thursday.
°I am grateful for Phil's help,"he added
Mall groundbreaking is class act
Last week's mall groundbreaking happened past deadline last Wednesday so we had a
picture but no article. But everyone was there, anyhow, and all agreed: IT WAS A CLASS
ACT.
A plane flew overhead congratulating the Marketplace;the Tim Webber lunch buffet bor-
deredon the opulent;Mimi and the bulldozer(sounds like a Children's book,doesn't it?)were
close enough to cause some anxiety and far enough away to be safe.Rouse VP Michael Bryant
was smooth as glass as a master of ceremonies, and he captivated the audience with his intro-
ductions:"if I said'Mr.Duda'half the crowd would stand up."
Bryant and Rouse insist that the Marketplace will be"much more than a mall"with green-
ery walls and extensive landscaping into the site.
They announced a large United Artists theatre that will be part of the complex, and repre-
sentatives from the Oviedo City Council(Phil Hampton)and the Seminole Commissioners(Pat
Warren and Dick VanDer Weide)comported themselves well.
VanDer Weide reminded the group assembled that"there will be 500 construction jobs,
2800jobs for the completed mall,with$60,000,000 annual salary,with S4millioninproperty
tax, with half of that going to the schools. There be$4.8 in impact fees, and all this willbe
a step in equalizing the tax burden between home owners and commercial ventures.
Bob Appleby, the president ofDillards, called the Rouse compare'(which he deals within
23 other states)a"First class operation" and he said a retail store has been needed in the
community for a longtime. He looked over the crowd and said we all needed Dillards charge
cards and Mimi Bruce, who was standing by him, said she had one.It was a Kodak moment.
In fact, the whole deal was a Kodak moment. As the confetti flew and the Duda officials,
Joseph Duda and Perry Reeder, smiled for the camera, the long struggle between pro and anti-
mall groups was over.
"Some have said this is just a public relations event. It's not.The construction has begun
on the Marketplace at Oviedo Crossing"said Michael Bryant.
Whew.How do you spell"Relief?"
Goodness knows, the Rouse people earned this mall. And we all whooped it up.Grand,
grand,day.
