Central Winds Park

WINTER SPRINGS-Land clearing is scheduled to
begin in about a week for the long-awaited 59-acre
Central Winds Park on the southern shore of Lake
Jesup.
If work is not delayed, the first phase should be
completed in January at the park on the north side
of State Road 434 at Wagner's Curve, according to
park designer David Barth of the Orlando architec-
tural firm of Glatting Lopez Kercher Anglin Inc.
Meanwhile, Barth will apply for a second $150,000
grant from the Department of Natural Resource's
Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program
to help pay for some of the park's construction. If ap-
proved, the grant would be awarded next spring.
According to Barth, the grant could be used to put
in a boardwalk that would meander through the
park, which will have 2,200 feet on Lake Jesup. It
also could be used to build more ball fields.
A similar grant was approved in March by Gov.
Lawton Chiles and the Cabinet. That money will be
used to build fields for baseball, softball and soccer,a
playground, multipurpose field,bicycling and hiking
paths,three picnic areas,two restrooms,a concession
stand, 50 parking spaces, utilities, landscaping, irri-
gation and a septic system.
The entire park, which planners predict will cost
more than $4.8 million, will include 380 parking
spaces,an overflow parking area, tennis and racquet-
ball courts, an all-purpose pool and a therapeutic Q lay
1 0
pool, volleyball and basketball areas, a recreation I 6
center, observation deck, an amphitheater, perform-
ing arts stage, picnic areas, playground equipment
and shuffleboard.
Also included in the design are a fishing pavilion
and a conservation area for four gopher tortoises liv-
ing on the property. Restrooms, a maintenance
building and caretaker's home also are planned.
