REQUEST:
The Parks and Recreation Department wishes to inform the City Commission of the results
of the 2013 Scottish Highland Games Special Event.
SYNOPSIS:
The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission regarding the results of the 2013
Scottish Highland Games Special Event at Central Winds Park.
CONSIDERATIONS:
The Scottish American Society of Central Florida conducted its 36th Annual Scottish
Highland Games at Central Winds Park over 2 days (Saturday 1/19 and Sunday
1/20).
The event organizers and staff concluded that this year’s event had the highest
attendance of any of the Highland Games held in Winter Springs, with an estimated
attendance of 30K+.
All City Departments worked together to provide excellent service to our Scottish
Games partners, vendors, sponsors, and rental companies to assist with event
logistics.
Post event evaluation meeting was held on January 31st with City officials. City
departments demonstrated excellent teamwork & cooperation assisting the event
organizer through the evaluation process.
Chip Crawford expressed his appreciation to the City of Winter Springs for their
event support and for their $3,000 sponsorship for the 2013 games.
Scottish Highland Games has one year remaining on a 3-year agreement with the City
of Winter Springs. Event organizer, Chip Crawford and City staff have

verbally committed to a ten year agreement when the current agreement expires after
the 2014 event.
Next year’s Scottish Highland Games will be on January 18-19, 2014.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Scottish American Society of Central Florida paid:
Central Winds Park rental revenue of $6,000 less $3,000 (due to one time City
sponsorship for 2013 games only) for a net park rental revenue of $3,000, and
a $3,000 donation (per contract) for future City special events.
COMMUNICATION EFFORTS:
This Agenda Item has been electronically forwarded to the Mayor and City Commission,
City Manager, City Attorney/Staff, and is available on the City’s Website, LaserFiche, and
the City’s Server. Additionally, portions of this Agenda Item are typed verbatim on the
respective Meeting Agenda which has also been electronically forwarded to the individuals
noted above, and which is also available on the City’s Website, LaserFiche, and the City’s
Server; has been sent to applicable City Staff, Media/Press Representatives who have
requested Agendas/Agenda Item information, Homeowner’s Associations/Representatives
on file with the City, and all individuals who have requested such information. This
information has also been posted outside City Hall, posted inside City Hall with additional
copies available for the General Public, and posted at five (5) different locations around the
City. Furthermore, this information is also available to any individual requestors. City Staff
is always willing to discuss this Agenda Item or any Agenda Item with any interested
individuals.
Additional advertising through Disney Radio promoting Caitlyn Boyd, the 2012 "Brave"
look-a-like contest winner. The Central Florida Scottish American Society advertised the
games brochure on their website.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff requests the City Commission receive and review the information provided in this
Agenda Item.
