REQUEST:
Utility Department Informing the City Commission on the Potable and Reclaimed Water Use
for 2012.
SYNOPSIS:
The purpose of this agenda item is to provide the City Commission with data on potable and
reclaimed water use for the 2012 calendar year.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Potable Water
Potable water use for 2012 totaled 1,336,705,000 gallons, which is a reduction of 49,124,000 gallons
from 2011. Groundwater withdrawals are at the lowest level since 2002. According to the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association, Central Florida is in a moderate drought period. We
received 52.0 inches of rainfall in 2012 which, although 4 inches more than rainfall than in 2011, is
2 inches below average rainfall levels. The annual water use in 2012 was 357 million gallons or
21% below the St. Johns River Water Management District Consumptive Use Permit allowance of
1,693,600 gallons. Factors contributing to the decreased water demand may include the economy,
empty households, and a full time City water conservation coordinator.
