WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is a serious and under recognized threat to women's health -
the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers; and
WHEREAS, according to estimates by the American Cancer Society, more than 21,650
women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, and approximately 75% of these
cases will be detected in the advance stages; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society also estimates more than 15,520 women will
die from ovarian cancer in the United States in 2008, more than cervical and uterine
cancers combined; and
WHEREAS, there is cause for increased concern as the population ages because
advancing age is one of the known risk factors for the development of ovarian cancer;
and
WHEREAS, with early diagnosis and specialized care, survival rates increase
dramatically; and
WHEREAS, raising public awareness about ovarian cancer by educating women,
healthcare professionals and the general public about risks and symptoms of the disease
may save women's lives;
NOW, THEREFO E, 1, JOHN F. I: USI Mayor of the City of Winter
Springs, do hereby proclaim September 2008 as;
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Whereas, ovarian cancer is a serious and under recognized threat to women's health- the
deadliest of the gynecologic cancers; and
Whereas, according to estimates by the American Cancer Society, more than 21,650
women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, and approximately 75% of these
cases will be detected in the advance stages; and
Whereas the American Cancer Society also estimates more than 15,520 women will die
from ovarian cancer in the United States in 2008, more than cervical and uterine cancers
combined; and
Whereas the Florida Cancer Data System, the state wide cancer registry reports 1507 new
ovarian cancers on average per year since 2000; and
Whereas there is cause for increased concern as the population ages because advancing
age is one of the known risk factors for the development of ovarian cancer; and
Whereas, with early diagnosis and specialized care, survival rates increase dramatically;
and
Whereas, raising public awareness about ovarian cancer by educating women, healthcare
professionals and the general public about risks and symptoms of the disease may save
women's lives;
Now, Therefore, I, John F. Bush, Mayor of the City of Winter Springs, Florida, do hereby
extend greetings and best wishes to the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Florida and to all
observing and promoting Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, September 2008.
