HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008 September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month pRocLAmArrioN OFFICE OF THE MAYOR WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is a serious and under recognized threat to women's health - the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers; and WHEREAS, according to estimates by the American Cancer Society, more than 21,650 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, and approximately 75% of these cases will be detected in the advance stages; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society also estimates more than 15,520 women will die from ovarian cancer in the United States in 2008, more than cervical and uterine cancers combined; and WHEREAS, there is cause for increased concern as the population ages because advancing age is one of the known risk factors for the development of ovarian cancer; and WHEREAS, with early diagnosis and specialized care, survival rates increase dramatically; and WHEREAS, raising public awareness about ovarian cancer by educating women, healthcare professionals and the general public about risks and symptoms of the disease may save women's lives; NOW, THEREFO E, 1, JOHN F.
