HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011 09 21 Regular 602 Information on Wayfinding Signs BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE AGENDA CONSENT INFORMATIONAL ITEM 602 PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR X MGR /DEPT September 21, 2011 Meeting Authorization REQUEST:Community DevelopmentDepartment-Planning Division is providing the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee(BPAC) information regarding Wayfinding Signsin theCity of Winter Springsand is requesting the BPAC identify major attractions in the City wherewayfinding signagecan be beneficial. SYNOPSIS: On June 15, 2011, a regular agenda item was provided to the BPAC with links to in depth information onwayfinding signage to assist BPAC members in creating a list ofmajor Cityattractionswayfinding signage canprovidedirection to.This agenda item briefly discusses the concept of wayfinding signage.Staff is looking for additional input from the BPAC to determine priority locations in the City wayfinding signagecan offer direction to. CONSIDERATIONS: In many places around the world, signage is erected that offers directions to major attractions. This type of signage is commonly referred toas wayfinding signage. Wayfinding signage helps people find their way in public places and servesas a frame of reference. These signs can come in many different forms such as highway signage, and pedestrian signage that offersdirectionto major attractions such as City Hall, a Town Center, or to public transportation. At the June 15, 2011 meeting, staff suggested the BPAC create a list of major attractions in the city that could be provided on wayfinding signs in the City.As a result, board member Kok Wan Mah prepared a list with the following major attractions listed in a prioritized order: City Hall, Post Office, Central Winds Park, Trotwood Park, Winter Springs Town Center, Keeth Elementary, Winter Springs Elementary, Layer Elementary, Indian Trails Middle, Winter Springs High, Dog Park, and the Cross Seminole Trailhead.City staff has also considered some September 21, 2011 Agenda Item #602 Page 2of 2 ofthe details associated with wayfinding signage in the City’s Town Centerand will be working with the property managers to formulate a conceptual wayfinding signage program. Electronic and interactivesignage may be a part of this program. FISCAL IMPACT: This agenda item is for the BPAC’s review and information only and has no fiscal impact. COMMUNICATION EFFORTS: The Meeting Agendaand this Agenda Item have been forwarded to the Bicycle And Pedestrian Advisory Committeemembers and are available on the City’s Website, LaserFiche, and the City’s Server. The Agenda has been forwarded to the Mayor and City Commission; City Manager; and City Attorney/Staff. Additionally, the Meeting Agenda has been sent to media/press representatives, all Homeowner’s Associations on file with the City, all individuals who have requested Agenda information, Department Directors; and also posted outside City Hall; posted inside City Hall with additional copies available for the general public. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommendsthat the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committeereview the information in this agenda item and provide staff with a list of major attractions in the City that wayfinding signage can provide direction to.
