REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department wishes to inform the Commission
about new dog training programs at our Winter Springs Dog Park.
SYNOPSIS: The Parks and Recreation Department has been approached by our citizens &
dog park users requesting that we offer a variety of dog training programs.
These programs would include agility training, dog responsibility, service
dogs, leash work, puppy classes, K -9 courses while continuing to create an
awareness of our spectacular Dog Park.
CONSIDERATIONS:
• The Winter Springs Dog Park has approximately 150 -200 users per day during the
week. On Saturdays, there are approximately 350- 400. (Survey done by Park
Rangers)
• Many of our park users have requested additional training, such as agility, puppy
training, group interactions, and obedience programs to be offered by the City.
• These programs would enhance the park opportunities for our customers.
• After much research, staff has concluded that using outside vendors on a profit share
arrangement to be the best approach to engage the City to providing these programs.
• These arrangements will engage us to provide these programs at no cost to the City &
in fact, provide revenue.
• Additional benefits are opportunity for law enforcement to gain additional training &
certifications, to promote responsible dog ownership, family protection, obedience
and social interaction training.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No City expenditures. The training programs will be coordinated through a City approved
standard instructors agreement for programs. Revenues will be based on class attendance and
pricing structure with the profit sharing arrangement of 80% Instructor & 20% City.
