REQUEST: The Utility Department is providing information to the City Commission on the
upcoming Water Saving Shower Head Giveaway the week of November 1st,
2010.
SYNOPSIS: The City will be hosting a Water Saving Shower Head Giveaway from November 1St
to November 5th, 2010 from 9am -4pm at City Hall.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Residents can come to City Hall during the above listed times and present a recent copy of their
Winter Springs utility bill to receive one free low flow shower head. A traditional shower head uses
2.5 gallons per minute, while the low flow shower heads use only 1.25 gallons per minute. A total
of 100 shower heads are available for distribution. Residents are also able to contact the water
conservation coordinator to have a showerhead delivered to their residence if the pick -up times are
not convenient for them.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Shower heads were purchased out of the water conservation fund through the Utility Department at
a unit cost of $3.26 for a total cost of $326. The monthly savings per household for water and sewer
is estimated to be $6, which equates to an estimated annual total savings for 100 households of
$7,200.
COMMUNICATION EFFORTS:
The Seminole Chronicle will publish a short article on the water conservation program and the
shower head giveaway. The Orlando Sentinel will list the event in the Community Events section.
If possible, the Tuscawilla Today will advertise the event in their monthly publication. The event
will be posted on the City website, an e -alert will be sent, flyers will be placed at the payment
counters and left at City parks, and a message about the event will be listed on the utility bills.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Commission accept this information.

The shower is the third largest water user inside the home. If your shower head was
purchased within the last 16 years, it uses 2.5 gallons per minute. The low flow shower
head pictured above uses only 1.25 gallons per minute while providing the feel of a
higher flow shower head. Help conserve water and lower your utility bill by upgrading
your shower head. Stop by the City hall lobby the week of November 1st and present a
recent City of Winter Springs water bill to receive one free shower head. You may also
contact the water conservation coordinator to have a shower head dropped off at your
residence.
