Dear Mr. McLemore,
This letter is in response to your request to schedule a joint meeting with the City
of Winter Springs and Seminole County Board of County Commissioners in
regard to transit funding, We have made several attempts to obtain a date for
the proposed work session; and offer the following dates for consideration:
July 27, 2004 4:00 P,M.
(immediately following the BCC afternoon session)
August 10, 2004 4:00 P.M.
(immediately following the BCC afternoon session)
August 24,2004 4:00 P,M.
(immediately following the BCC afternoon session)
Please contact me at your convenience ifany of these dates are amenable with
your Commission so that we may finalize a date and time.

Lead Agency: City of Winter Springs (in response to an invitation from Congressman John Mica to
apply for grant funds)
Possible Partner Agencies:

. Trail Associations
Purpose of Project: To extend the Seminole Trail from Winter Springs to Lake Mary and provide
educational opportunities to students and the community.
Role of SCPS:
. Design a program that results in the trail being used by SCPS as an educational tool to increase
student achievement and enhance career education
o Environmental Science
o Environmental Engineering
o Support the City of Winter Springs in an effort to provide environmental educational services to
trail users
o Support the collaborative effort for outdoor classrooms located along the trail (informational
kiosks located in close proximity to WSHS and LES; flora and fauna signage located along the
trail extension)
o Develop and implement a "hands-on" science learning experience that supports FCAT Science
higher level and critical thinking skills
o Develop instructional units containing essential questions and based on the concepts of
Understanding By Design
o Provide evidence of in-kind contributions to the project (i,e., educational services, staff salaries
and buildings at the Environmental Studies Center; salaries, material and equipment from
WSHS's Environmental Science program and LHS's Environmental Engineering program)
Responsibilities of SCPS:
o Participation in grant and project development
o On-going collaboration for educational programs
o In-kind contribution (as noted above)
Benefits to SCPS:
o Expanded educational opportunities for students, including knowledge and experiences that will
improve FCA T science scores
Increased professional development opportunities for teachers and staff
Expanded articulation with SCC and UCF in environmental science and engineering
Strengthened collaboration with county agencies and organizations
o Expanded opportunities for student and community involvement in environmental activities
o Increased opportunity to develop program alignment between Layer, Lyman and Winter Springs
