Authorization
REQUEST: The Public Works Department, Urban Beautification Division, is requesting the
Commission review information about landscape improvements to the George
Street greenbelt areas.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this Agenda Item is to inform the Commission of beautification
improvement plans to the greenbelt areas between George Street and State Road 419.
CONSIDERATIONS:
George Street runs parallel to State Road 419 and is separated by a greenbelt area with
housing on this street directly exposed to traffic noise from the busy roadway. The greenbelt area
along George Street is essentially barren of landscaping except for a few trees and is currently used by
several residents as a parking area.
The Beautification Advisory Board has been working for several months on a
landscape and irrigation plan for the George Street greenbelt area that would utilize sustainable and
low maintenance landscape material. After consulting with the City Arborist, the Advisory Board has
agreed to the following plant material for the landscape plan.
1.
2.
5.
Southern Red Cedar
Sand Live Oak
Crape Myrtle
3.
4.
Yaup on Holly
Sand Cord Grass
In addition, low volume irrigation will be used in the establishment of the new plant
material and trees; eventually being discontinued until watering is needed in extreme drought
conditions. The landscape plan extends the length of George Street in the greenbelt area and will
provide a formidable solution to the noise problem while also beautifying the area.
