Authorization
REQUEST: Police Department providing information to the Commission concerning its
recommendation for approval from The Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this board item is to inform the Commission that the Police
Department has received recommendation for International Accreditation by The Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CLEA).
CONSIDERATIONS: On August 31, 2005 the Winter Springs Police Department was
recommended for the status of a Internationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agency by The
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The Police Department will be the
only municipality in Seminole County to be internationally accredited by The Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. There are only 21 Police Departments in Florida that
have achieved full CALEA Accreditation.
The accreditation process required an in-depth review of every aspect of the agency's organization,
management, operations, and administration to include:
. Establishment of agency goals and objectives with provision for periodic updating;
. Proof of compliance with 438 standards governing operation of the Department.
. Community meeting held for any person(s) who wanted to comment on the agency.
. Re-evaluation of whether agency resources are being used in accordance with agency goals,
objectives, and mission;
. Re-evaluation of agency policies and procedures, especially as documented in the agency's and
cities written directive system;
The agency is compelled to operate within specific guidelines. It is accountable to the Commission.
The agency must stay in compliance with the standards set forth by The Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
The Winter Springs Police Department was also commended for its continued involvement within
the community including Citizens Advisory Committee, and Summer Youth Basketball program as
