Authorization
REQUEST: Public Works Department Reporting to the City Commission Regarding the
Complaint on Buttonwood Avenue
PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to update the City Commission on the response
to the complaint from the resident on Buttonwood Avenue about dangerous trees,
damage to a canoe, and street drainage problems.
CONSIDERATIONS:
At the April 8, 2002 City Commission, the resident from 249 Buttonwood Avenue
brought up several complaints during public input. First, the resident was concerned
about two trees on City property behind his house. The arborist has inspected the trees
and provided the attached report. The trimming has been completed as recommended.
Second, the damage to the canoe has been submitted to our insurance carrier.
However, previous similar claims have been denied because we are not liable for "acts of
God". Third, the standing water in the street will be corrected by the Public Works
Department within the next thirty days at a cost of approximately $3,000 due to the
curbing needing replaced.

RE: Oak Tree Damage 249 Buttonwood
Recently I visited the property at 249 Buttonwood with Public
Works Superintendent Alan Hill to observe the condition of a
large Live oak tree on City property behind the above address.
The tree had-been previously pruned from a former storm damage
and appeared to need additional pruning (which occurred mostly
on the side adjacent to the above property).
"
The tree is still living but in decline and may in the future
need additiional pruning. In its present condition the tree
can provide excellent habitat for bird~:and other wildlife.
Periodic inspections will be conducted to determine the status
of this plant.
Next to this tree is a large Red Maple which needs pruning. It
has a large limb which'has split and fallen onto the above
property and done damage to a small row boat on the ground beneath
it. Limb pruning is recommended to prevent future problems.
