REQUEST: Information Services wishes to update the Commission on
the status of the Blackberry Implementation.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to update the Commission on the status of the
Blackberry implementation for the Mayor, Commission, and Department
Directors.
CONSIDERATIONS:
On May 9,2005, the City Commission approved a plan for the implementation of
Blackberry devices for the Mayor, Commission, and Department Directors (for
those who want them) which would include cellular service as well as email and
data on the devices.
When will this project be completed?
This project was assigned to an Information Services (I.S.) employee on May 10,
2005. The I.S. employee had a death in the family which delayed the project by
several weeks. This project is now back on track. Attached, you will find the
revised implementation schedule which may change during the course of the
proj ect.

With this revised schedule, we should be able to deploy Blackberry devices to the
Mayor and Commission by Wednesday June 15, 2005 and to Department
Directors by July 11, 2005.
Why does it take so long to set up?
The email side of the Blackberry devices runs on a Blackberry Server which
integrates with our corporate email. This Blackberry Server is being moved to a
different server and new Enterprise licensing must be implemented to
accommodate the additional users to the system. This new server must be loaded,
configured, and tested. Then the Blackberry devices can be brought on-line,
configured, synched with Exchange and tested as well. The existing accounts for
the Information Services Department employees are also being included in this
project which requires additional time be added to the project. The phone
numbers for Department Directors with existing Nextel service must be *ported
over, phonebooks downloaded, etc. *Porting of existing phone numbers is
entirely dependent upon the vendor (Nextel) and may take place quickly or it may
take few days, or a few weeks. This is an unknown for this project which may
affect the delivery dates.
NOTE: It should be noted that the em ail portion of the Blackberry devices are
being configured to work with City of Winter Springs email services, and are
not intended to work with the individual's personal or home email services.
