REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department requests that the City Commission review
information on the Community Youth Organization (C.Y.O) supervised basketball
summer program at Torcaso Park.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to assure that the City Commission is informed of all
the pertinent details regarding this activity scheduled to begin on June 4, 200 I.
CONSIDERATIONS:
. The C.Y.O. (Community Youth Organization) is a program held every summer in
co.operation with the Parks and Recreation, Police and Fire Departments. It's purpose is to
offer more expanded supervised alternatives for the youth of Winter Springs.
. The C.Y.O. program is a organized and supervised basketball program held during the
summer at Torcaso Park. The program reaches about a hundred Boys and Girls ages six
(6) to eighteen (18) during the hours of 6:00pm to 9:00pm, Monday through Friday, for
an eight week period, from June 4, 200 I to July 27, 2001. Recreational Leaders, Police
Officers, Firefighters and other City employees supervise the program, which is offered at
no cost to the participants.
. Upon entering the park, the participants will register and will be broken into appropriate
age groups for supervised practices and game play. To provide assistance for this activity
employees will be utilized as coaches, scorers, and referees (Four (4) Recreational
Leaders as well as Police Resource Officers and Firefighters.) The city employees
participating in the program are viewed as positive role models for the communities
youth.
. Supplies for this activity include reversible jerseys, whistles, basketballs and other
miscellaneous supplies. The Parks and Recreation Department will expend
approximately $4,500 from the Athletics budget for this activity. Sponsorships are being
solicited from the community to help reduce costs.
FUNDING:
No additional funding is needed.
The Parks and Recreation Department will expend approximately $4,500 which is
budgeted from the Athletics budget for this activity.
RECOMMENDATION:
No recommendations are needed, as this item is for informational purposes only.
IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE:
The c.Y.a. supervised basketball program is scheduled to begin on June 4, 2001.
