REQUEST: Public Works Department Responding to the Question Regarding the Recent
Culvert cleaning of Gee Creek at S.R. 434.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this Board item is to respond to the question raised at the April
23rd City Commission meeting regarding the recent culvert cleaning and bank
stabilization on Gee Creek at S.R. 434.
CONSIDERA TIONS:
The Oviedo maintenance office ofFDOT was the group responsible for the culvert
dredging and subsequent bank stabilization of Gee Creek at S.R. 434. According to Basil
Saghorchi, FDOT -Oviedo maintenance engineer, the banks were covered with a filter
fabric and then concrete riprap to stabilize the banks and prevent the erosion from the
banks from occurring which contributed to the blockages in the culvert under S.R. 434.
The top of the bank was then sodded.
Using concrete rubble for riprap is a common practice both by the FDOT and City
crews. While occasionally a bank may collapse resulting in the riprap falling into the
creek, we have found it to be an effective method of deterring bank erosion.
