Meeting Authorization
REQUEST: Fire Department informing the City Commission as to the information
requested regarding the Seminole County transportation study.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to present information that was directed by the City
Commission during the August 13,2001 City Commission Meeting as it pertains
to transportation services for the citizens.
CONSIDERATIONS:
During the City Commission meeting held on February 26,2001 under Commissioner Martinez
report, the Commissioner was interested in alternatives for senior transportation. Further
discussion by the City Commission resulted in direction to bring back options for the City
Commission to consider. An agenda item was prepared and was presented to the City
Commission on August 13,2001 containing multiple options. It was the decision of the
Commission to accept alternative number 5 which states "A final alternative could be to wait
until Seminole County completes the transportation study and makes recommendations that the
City could further evaluate," Further direction by the Commission was to bring back an
informational agenda item that would outline if the City of Winter Springs have proper
representation in the Seminole County study.
The Fire Chief also discussed with the City Commission the possibility to have the Community
Development Department accept the responsibility of transportation issues if staff was available
with experience in the transportation area. After discussion with the City Manager and the
Community Development Director, it was decided that the recently employed Advance Planning
Coordinator, Earnest McDonald has experience in transportation planning and will assume the
role of representing the City in transportation issues.
Furthermore, Seminole County Planning Department and their consultant Glatting, Jackson,
Kercher, Anglin, Lopez, & Rinehart, Inc. was made aware of the City's desire to have input in
the study to allow proper representation for our citizens in transportation matters.
