PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to update the City Commission on the status of George Street on street parking and related issues. CONSIDERATIONS: The City Commission approved the resolution allowing on street parking on George Street on February 27th. A petition was presented where 10 of the 18 homeowners preferred the parking on the side of George Street opposite the homes which we have no objection to. Public Works staff installed the appropriate signage and the Police Department informed the residents the on street parking and enforcement of no parking in the grass area would be effective March 13th. No parking related problems have been observed and the on street parking appears to be working as planned. The Commission had other questions about George Street as follows: Additional gravel parking area - Feedback from residents indicate they very much like the green space and planting efforts initiated by the Commission. The on street parking appears sufficient. Staff will continue to monitor. Sidewalks - The existing sidewalk is four feet wide with no additional right of way on the west for widening. Weare monitoring the pedestrian (school walkers) to determine if a five foot sidewalk on the east side of George Street is needed. Informational Agenda Item 503 March 27,2006 Page 2 Drainage/curbing - Limited rain events have not allowed us to make sufficient findings. The brief rain on 3/21 verified the curb flows well. The relatively flat profile of the street probably lends itself to full curbs during heavy storm events. Staff will monitor as rains reoccur to determine to what if any extent the stormwater flow encroaches onto the sidewalk. CuI de sac - Not previously evaluated as it did not address resident parking issue. No cut through traffic noted during the recent staff time spent in area. One way street - Generally used to improve traffic flow or prevent a specific cut through trip. Observed traffic appears to be limited to residents. Improved traffic flow not needed. Two way traffic with on street parking will create a yield situation which acts as a traffic calming measure. Police Department will continue to monitor and solicit resident feedback.
