Authorization
REQUEST: Public Works Department Providing the City Commission with additional
information regarding FDOT requirements for median tree planting.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this Commission item is to provide details and estimated costs
regarding canopy tree planting on the SR 434 medians.
CONSIDERATIONS:
The City Commission requested additional information regarding FDOT standards for
planting canopy trees in the SR 434 medians during the December 13,2004 meeting.
FDOT requirements for installing canopy tree plantings in medians are as follows:
'E' type curbing is required to be installed for the length ofthe planting project, there
is currently no curbing at asphalt edge along the SR 434 medians.
Medians are required to have a 'crown' in the center as FDOT does not allow ponding
(water collection during a rain event) on the medians. This would be achieved by
adding clean fill and sod to build up these areas. Relocation of irrigation systems and
existing crape myrtle trees would also be necessary in most cases.
Areas that are utilized for storm water run off would need additional consideration to
meet FDOT standards. Requirements would be determined by a future site survey.
FDOT roadway sight and distance guidelines must be observed when planting canopy
trees.

It is prudent to note that FDOT does have SR 434 slated for potential lane expansion within a 10
year time period. The new canopy trees can be installed, in many areas, to avoid being disturbed
by the FDOT road expansion proj ect.
