Men Can Reduce the Risk of Heart
Attack and Cancer by Donating
Blood Three Times a Year
Donating blood not only saves other people's lives, it may save your
life as well. According to research, donating blood just three times
a year can dramatically reduce the chance of a heart attack and
certain types of cancer in men. Medical evidence shows that too
much iron in the human body may lead to colon cancer and
clogging of the arteries - that in turn may lead to a heart attack.
Blood loss is a simple way to rid the body of excess iron. Women
who lose blood through menstruation have about half the amount of
iron in their bodies as men do. Because men store iron at a much
higher level than do women, it is important for them to be able to
continually reduce that level. Regularly donating blood, which can
be as often as every eight weeks, is one of the best and easiest ways
for men to lower the level of iron in their blood, thus reducing
associated risks.
Research shows that men who donate blood regularly - three times
a year - are less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke, undergo
heart surgery or require heart medications than men who do not
give blood. Individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease should
manage and reduce all established risk factors, such as smoking,
a high-fat diet and a sedentary lifestyle.
Donating blood is safe, it's simple and - for men - it may help save
their lives.
Donors can call 1-800-852-0346 to find the closest donation site
to them.

African-Americans Are Crucial
And Rare Blood Donors
Nationally, 14 million blood donations are made each year.
Estimates report that African-Americans make only three to four
percent of those donations, yet they receive approximately 30%
of the transfusions.
In Central Florida, the growing African-American population
continues to outpace the shrinking number of donors. This is
of particular concern due to the rare inherited blood disorder...
sickle-cell anemia ... affecting much of the African-American
community.
Typically, rejection will occur if the transfused blood and the blood
of the patient ~o not closely match - causing serious complications
or death:' To help alleviate this serious problem, more
African-American blood donors are needed. This will increase
the availability of compatible blood during emergency situations.
Donating blood takes less than an hour, and includes a free health
screening to check blood pressure, iron level, cholesterol,
temperature and pulse.
The fact is that all blood donors save lives. But often only African-
American donors can provide the blood that will be compatible
with sickle cell patients.
Donors can call 1-800-852-0346 to find the closest donation site
to them.
