COMMISSION AGENDA
ITEM 501
INFORMATIONAL
January 23,2006
Meeting
MGR/IDEPT
Authorization
REQUEST: Utility Department Informing the City Commission on the Potable Water
Usage for 2005.
PURPOSE: The purpose ofthis agenda item is to inform the City Commission on the potable
water usage for 2005 compared to prior years.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Since the City Commission adopted the water restriction ordinance on February
26, 2001 and rainfalls have returned to "normal", the annual potable water usage in the
City has consistently been lower than the amounts allocated by our CUP permit. The
attached graph shows the recent history of potable water usage. The water consumption
for 2005 was 436,000,000 gallons less than the annual permitted capacity. Prior to 2001
the annual usage exceeded the permitted capacity. The Consumption Use Permit was
issued to the City in October 1996 and expires in October 2006. The graph shows the
annual allotted increase in the permitted capacity by year which increases each year by an
average of 2.6 %.
The first four (4) years of the permit, the city exceeded the annual permitted
capacity by a total of 752,000,000 gallons. Over the period of the past four (4) years the
city has had a total reduction of 1,443,000,000 gallons of the permitted allocations. There
has also been an increase in the population since 1997 of approximately 8,900 persons.
