COMMISSION AGENDA
ITEM 501 INFORMATIONAL
January 9,2006 MGR. /DEPT
Meeting Authorization
REQUEST: Community Development Department is advising the City Commission of the
status of banner signs in the Town Center.
PURPOSE:
This agenda item is to update the Commission on the status of banners in the Town Center and
to advise the Commission that staff will be reviewing the code language relating to the
regulation of banners in the Town Center as part of the on-going efforts to clarify code
language.
CONSIDERATION:
Pursuant to the City's Code or Ordinances, Chapter 16, Section 16-87; banner signs require a
permit which is valid for 14 days. Dimensions and site location are not addressed by the Code.
In the Greenway Interchange District; Chapter 20, Section 20-337 (15), permits for temporary
signs, such as pennant and banner signs, not otherwise prohibited are allowed for such
purposes as auctions, special events, notice of opening new businesses, and going out of
business sales. Permits for temporary signs shall authorize the erection of the signs and
maintenance thereof for a period of time not exceeding 14 days; and permits cannot be
renewed on the same sign, nor shall another temporary permit be issued on the same location,
within ninety (90) days from the date of expiration of any previously issued temporary permit.
These same restrictions apply for the 434 Corridor Overlay District in both the New
Development Area and the Redevelopment Area. Again, no dimensional or location criteria
are provided in the Code. The Town Center Code does not discuss banners specifically.
Therefore, the 434 Corridor Overlay District language applies to the regulation of banners in
the Town Center.
