Before you dig, verify the location of any utility lines buried
beneath your planting project.
Dig a hole (2) times the diameter of the root ball and no deeper
than the root ball's height. In compacted or poorly drained
soils, elevate the root ball by berming up with a loose, sandy
soil.
Back-fill with removed soil, making sure the top of the root
ball is 1 inch above grade, adding water to eliminate air pock-
ets.
Forma 4-6 inch high berm or saucer out of the excess dirt and
sod, approximately 1 foot out from the trunk.
Add 3 inches of mulch to the top of the berm, being careful to
keep the mulch several inches from the tree trunk.
Watering Your Tree
1. Newly planted trees require water every day with at least 3 gal-
lons per inch of trunk caliper for the first month and every
other day for the next 3 to 4 months. Watering as needed for
the remainder of the first year.
2. Water by hand only. Use a hose with an automatic on/off
switch or use a bucket. This will help you to comply with wa-
tering restrictions.
3. If soils are poorly drained, water less frequently.

TREE TIPS
Selection *Right plant -right spot (light exposure, pH, soil moisture, etc)
Don't plant large trees under power tines or too close to a house!
*Choose a tree that is healthy and has good form
Planting *Don't plant deep! (Top of root ball level with surrounding soil)
NO SOIL SHOULD BE PLACED ON TOP OF THE ROOT BALL
*Dig hole as deep as root ball but twice as wide!
*Don't amend the backfill
*Don't fertilize at planting
*Don't pnrne the top of the plant before transplanting
*Remove turf to create a mulch ring that is 2 feet in radius per 1 inch of
trunk diameter! ! !
Watering *Build a water ring directly over the rootball
*In order to maintain rapid growth, trees transplanted into well-drained soil
require daily imgation for at least the first month. (Frequent irrigation
benefits the transplanted tree more than large volumes of water
infrequently applied. Here is an irrigation schedule for quickly
establishing trees in well-drained soil during the growing season.
Trunk diameter Freauenrv
Under 2 inches Daily for 2 months, then 3 times a week for 3 months, then
weekly until established.
2-4 inches Daily for 3 months, then 3 times a week for 45 months,
then weekly until established.
Over 4 inches Daily for 4-5 months, then 3 times a week for 5-7 months,
*The amount of water ~
Container grown
Ask the nursery where
the tree was purchased
how much water it was
then weekly until established
iepends on if the tree was container grown or field grown.
Meld grown
As a rule of thumb, apply 1 %2 to 3 gallons of water
per inch of trunk diameter each time the tree is
irrigated during the growing season.
irrigated with.
(Trees planted during the cooler months may need less water, depending on the weather and soil
drainage.)
Fertilizing *Broadcast the fertilizer underneath the limbs and out 2-3 times
*Don't use weed & feed more than 1 time per year if you have St. Augustine
Pruning *See publication "Pruning Landscape Trees and Shrubs"
