Desianin4 Your Butterfly Garden
Butterflies Ilke:
• sunny locations(although some butterflies prefer wooded areas)
• shelter from wind
• nectar-rich blooms
• host (larval) plants where they lay eggs
• moist sand or mud for `puddling'
• flat rocks or other light colored flat surfaces for basking
Other Considerations:
• an attractive, adaptable layout-consider the size of your area and use the
number and size of plants accordingly to achieve balance in the garden.
• use a wide variety of plants and plant heights -trees, shrubs, annuals, and
perennials
• choose plants that will provide color from one season to another
• the more different varieties of host (larval) plants you have the more different
varieties of butterflies you will. have present in your garden
• the same goes for nectar plants: variation in color and bloom type will attract a
greater selection of butterflies
• provide moist areas for puddling males
• provide basking areas for butterflies to warm their wings on cool days
• do not use pesticides in your butterfly garden -pesticides will kill any and
everything -eggs, larvae, and adult insects

The stained-glass patterns of butterflies add an extra dimension to this floral island bed, which bursts with
perennial and annual flowere that aro Irreslstlble to butterflies. A variety of blossoms offers nectar to adult
butterfltes, while leafy food sources, such as pareley, nourish the larvae. The one shrub in the design is commonly
called "butterfly bush" for good roaso~--it luros butterflies of all sorts. Rocks are convenient perches for
