Dear Samantha & Senior Girl Scout Troop 43:
This is in response to your inquiry to our Board on the possibility of you working with us
in connection with your Girl Scout Gold Award program.
We would appreciate your assistance with our Arbor Day Celebration scheduled for
Saturday, August 15, 1998, and hopefully this will become a Gold Award Project for you.
Instead of our usual practice of handing out trees to residents on Arbor Day, we now
intend to plant trees in certain areas, specifically - Edgemon Avenue, Murphy and Moss
Road. We need help with the planning which involves charting the lots that have existing
trees, naming the types of trees, listing the conditions of those trees, and listing lots that
have vacant areas where trees could be planted or replaced. You would be working under
the direction of Mr. Alan Hill, Public Works Superintendent and the Board to do these
specific tasks. We then need to notify the residents of these neighborhoods of the
Beautification plans and to encourage their enthusiasm and participation in this project.
This could be done by letters or door hangers, which you could make and distribute.
Then, plan a tree planting ceremony inviting residents and City Officials and all of this
would need to be done by our Arbor Day, Saturday, August 15, 1998.
You would continue to help with the after-care, ensuring the trees are maintained;
watering and pulling weeds when needed and preparing a survivability report on the
progress of these trees including both growth and reason for loss - if any.

We invite you to attend our next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at
7:00 p.m. to discuss any ideas that you might wish to contribute, if it becomes your Girl
Scout Gold Award project.
Sincerely,
Carol Morrison
