Authorization
REQUEST: Police Department providing information to the Commission concerning its approval
from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to inform the Commission that the Police
Department has received International Re-Accreditation by The Commission on Accreditation for
Law Enforcement Agencies (CLEA).
CONSIDERATIONS: On December 6, 2008 the Winter Springs Police Department was
awarded the status of an Internationally Re-Accredited Law Enforcement Agency by The
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies at a National Commission meeting in
Tulsa Oklahoma. The Police Department is the only municipality in Seminole County, Orange
County, Brevard County, Osceola County, and Lake County to be internationally accredited by The
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. There is currently less than 7% of
14,000 Police Departments nationwide that have achieved full CALEA Accreditation.
The accreditation process required an in-depth 4 day review of 460 standards that govern every
aspect of the agency's organization, management, operations, and administration. The Commission
was impressed with interaction between the officers and the community and particularly interested
in the Citizens advisory group and also highlighted our crime analysis capabilities. Noted as well
was that the agency has the lowest number of reported part 1 offensives and crime rate in Central
Florida.
The agency must stay in compliance with the standards set forth by The Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The Police Department will be evaluated again in
three years for re-certification.
The Winter Springs Police Department has set a standard in this city to deliver quality service in
order to ensure the highest quality of life possible. The Department is proud of this latest
accomplishment and will continue to strive for improvement in every aspect of our duties.
RECOMMENDATION: None at this time.
