REQUEST: Requesting the City Commission to consider granting an extra holiday for
employees for the day after Christmas 2008.
PURPOSE: This agenda item is needed for the City Commission to consider granting an extra holiday
for employees for the day after Christmas 2008.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Current City Personnel Polices provide for the following holidays:
1. New Year's Day
2. Martin Luther King's Birthday
3. Memorial Day
4. Independence Day
5. Labor Day
6. Veteran's Day
7. Thanksgiving Day
8. Day After Thanksgiving
9. Christmas Day
10. (1) Personal/Floating Day -credited to eligible employees on October 1 of each year, to
be taken prior to September 30 of the following year, with approval of the date by the
supervisor.
Since Christmas Day falls on a Thursday this year, some employees have inquired as to whether or not
they will also receive the following Friday as a holiday. In accordance with current policy, employees
will not receive the following Friday as a holiday.

Granting this additional holiday or any change to the current Personnel Policy would require
Commission approval via resolution. Accordingly, this issue is being presented to the Commission for
its consideration.
FUNDING:
No additional funding would be required if this item is approved other than the following:
Police Dept.: Approximate cost for holiday pay =approx. $3,500.
Utilities Dept.: Approximate cost for "required shift coverage" =approx. $500 (no General Fund
impact).
These costs can be absorbed under current budget.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Commission take whatever action it deems appropriate. If the Commission
desires to approve this additional holiday, staff will bring back a resolution to memorialize this action.
