RECREATION SURVEY - SUMMARY OF RESULTS
July, 1990
The survey results summarized below are based on data collected by The Datafax
Company, Inc. and detailed in their report entitled "Recreational Facility Preferences of
Residents Living Within the City of Winter Springs, July 1990".
1. Do you live within the City of Winter Springs city limits?
100% of the respondents are City of Winter Springs residents.
2. What is the age of each member of your family, including yourself?
Following are the percentages of the respondents within each age group:
Under 5: 8.6% 35-44: 19.1%
5-14: 16.2% 45-54: 10.0%

The most popular recreational activity participated in by Winter Springs residents
is swimming (8.0%), followed by walking/hiking (7.0%), bicycling (6.3%),

sightseeing (6.3%), and people watching (6.2%). Other high ranking activities are
attending festiva~s/fairs (6.0%), attending sports events (5.6%),
jogging/running/exercising (5.6%), picnicking (4.7%) and visiting nature centers
(4.2%).

Where do you go most frequently to participate in these activities?
The majority of respondents (21.2%) use their own home for recreational
activities. Other frequently used facilities identified include the beach (7.8%),
Tuscawilla Park (5.3%), Red Bug Park (5.0%), Tuscawilla Golf/Country Club
(4.8%), other area parks (4.3%), Wekiva Springs State Park (3.0%) and other
private facilities/country clubs (3.0%).

How do you travel to these activities?
Automobile? Bicycle?
Walk?
A resounding majority of respondents (87.9%) use their automobiles to travel to
recreation facilities. 7.6% of the respondents walk, while 3.0% travel by bicycle.

If you do not participate in recreational activities, why not?
According to the survey, 5.5% of the respondents do not participate in
recreational activities. Of these, 30.4% do not participate because they are too
busy, 26.1% because they are too old, and 26.1% because they are in poor
health. Also, 13% of the respondents do not participate because they are
disabled or handicapped.

7. In order of priority, what types of recreational facilities and programs do you
feel are most needed in the City of Winter Springs?
The following chart reflects the most needed recreational facilities or programs,
ranked in order of preference. This ranking is based on the percentage of
respondents who selected the activities as their first, second or third choice:
1. playground equipment 21.4%

63.8% of the respondents would be willing to pay a user fee; 31.9% would not be
willing to pay; and 4.3% don't know.
