REQUEST: The Police Department requests to utilize DGG Taser and Tactical Supply,
via state contract number 680 050 -10 -1, for the purchase of twenty -eight (28) new Taser
electronic restraint protection devices and 100 training cartridges in the amount of
$25,025.
PURPOSE: The city was recently awarded $109,351 as part of an Edward Byrne Grant
for the purpose of purchasing police equipment. The Police Department requests the
Commission to approve the expenditure of $25,025 from Edward Byrne Grant funds for
the purchase of twenty -eight (28) new Taser electronic restraint protection devices and
100 training cartridges to train new operators in the use of the device. This purchase will
allow us to equip every patrol officer with this tool who does not currently have one
issued. Over the years, the Taser has proven to be invaluable for improving officer safety
and minimizing injuries to officers and suspects alike.
CONSIDERATIONS: Over the last few years, the number of violent encounters officers
face has increased. An officer with a Taser restraint device is able to quickly diffuse
these situations while minimizing the risk of injury to the officer and the suspect. The
Police Department has been fortunate to have previously equipped twenty -six officers
with Tasers over the last few years.
FUNDING: Funding for the purchase of the Tasers and training cartridges will come
from Edward Byrne Grant funds, purchased under state contract.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the use of DGG Taser and Tactical Supply, via state
contract, for the purchase of twenty -eight (28) new Taser electronic restraint protection
devices and 100 training cartridges.
IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: Immediately upon Commission approval.
