REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department is informing the City Commission
regarding the potential 2010 Celebration of Freedom.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission regarding the
potential 2010 Celebration of Freedom.
CONSIDERATIONS:
No funding is budgeted in the 2010 budget for the Celebration of Freedom.
Last year the City Commission approved an event budget of $61,000 and a minimum of
$10,000 to be raised from sponsorships and vendors.
The event expended $54,858. A total of $27,516 was brought in through vendors and
donations with $11,000 in -kind services.
In result, the total general fund expenditure was $27,343.
Due to the current economic climate, staff believes it is to no advantage to firmly commit
to the event at this time. Staff would like to come back to the City Commission in
January 2009 to:
1. Determine if the City wishes to conduct and fund the event.
2. The date, budget, potential sponsors, partners, etc.
July 4, 2010 occurs on a Sunday. The last time it occurred on a Sunday, the City
Commission agreed to conduct the event on Saturday, July 3. There are many advantages
including:
o It is preferred by most residents because they are out late at night and they do not
need to get up early for school and work the next day.
o Other cities will have their event on July 4 and they may be able to assist Winter
Springs on July 3.
o Sunday, July 4 can be used as a rain date.
