Dept. Authorization X Mayor John F. Bush is asking the City Commission to review and consider approving Resolution Number 2009 -53 recognizing "City Government Week Mayor John F. Bush and the Florida League of Cities are requesting our City Commission support "City Government Week" This request and the following information has been sent from the Florida League of Cities who is suggesting we support "City Government Week "This year Florida City Government Week (FCGW) is October 18 24, 2009, and the Florida League of Cities wants to encourage every City to take an active part in promoting their City through civic education. This is a great opportunity to speak to schools and civic groups, host an open house at City Hall, create and sponsor a youth council, establish a Citizens' Academy, or reach out to Civic Clubs and Community Organizations. Florida City Government Week (FCGW) is part of an ongoing effort sponsored by the League to raise public awareness about the services that cities provide and to educate the public on how City government works. Cities are encouraged to involve their local schools, businesses, chambers of commerce, media and civic clubs in planning city activities. RECOMMENDATION: ATTACHMENT: COMMISSION ACTION: CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA CITY COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 12, 2009 REGULAR AGENDA ITEM "202" PAGE 2 OF 2 Cities provide a higher level of service than most governments, and generally receive a higher approval rate than any other level of government. Unfortunately, many residents are unaware of how City services impact their lives. Through this program, the League hopes to heighten the public's awareness on City government's role in enhancing the quality of life in communities." The City Commission is being requested to review and consider approving the attached Resolution Number 2009 -53 related to "City Government Week A. City of Winter Springs' Resolution Number 2009 -53. RESOLUTION NUMBER 2009 -53 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA RECOGNIZING "CITY GOVERNMENT WEEK OCTOBER 18 24, 2009 AND ENCOURAGING ALL CITIZENS TO SUPPORT THE CELEBRATION AND CORRESPONDING ACTIVITIES. ATTACHMENT "A" W HEREAS, city government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents; and W HEREAS, city government is administered for and by its citizens, and is dependent upon public commitment to and understanding of its many responsibilities; and W HEREAS, city government officials and employees share the responsibility to pass along their understanding of public services and their benefits; and W HEREAS, Florida "City Government Week" is a very important time to recognize the important role played by city government in our lives; and W HEREAS, this week offers an important opportunity to spread the word to all the citizens of Florida that they can shape and influence this branch of government which is closest to the people; and W HEREAS, the Florida League of Cities and its member cities have joined together to teach students and other citizens about municipal government through a variety of different projects and information; and W HEREAS, Florida "City Government Week" offers an important opportunity to convey to all the citizens of Florida that they can shape and influence government through their civic involvement. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Commission of the City of Winter Springs, Florida that: SECTION L That the City of Winter Springs does encourage all citizens, City government Officials and employees to do everything possible to ensure that this week is recognized and celebrated accordingly. SECTION 11 That the City of Winter Springs does encourage educational partnerships between City government and schools. SECTION tit. That the City of Winter Springs does support and encourage all city governments to actively promote and sponsor "Florida City Government Week." ADOPTED by the City Commission of the City of Winter Springs, Florida, in a Regular Meeting duly assembled on the day of 2009.
