REQUEST: The Public Works Department is providing an update on the expansion of
handicapped parking at the Winter Springs Senior Center
PURPOSE: The purpose of this agenda item is to provide an update on the expansion of
handicapped parking at the Winter Springs Senior Center
CONSIDERATIONS:
The Winter Springs Senior Center currently has a total of nine (9) handicapped parking spaces, with
five (5) in the front and four (4) in the back at the entrance to the therapy pool. Based on input from
Senior Center Staff and customers it was determined that additional handicapped parking is needed
at the front entrance of the Senior Center.
The Public Works Department has started work on creating five (5) additional handicapped parking
spaces at the front of the Senior Center. The work started on June 15, 2009 and is expected to be
complete by June 26, 2009.
The project consists of converting 11 existing parking spaces in the front parking lot (10 standard
and 1 handicapped not meeting code) into six (6) code-compliant handicapped spaces and two (2)
standard spaces, for a net overall loss of only 3 spaces (see Exhibit A). The overall parking onsite is
adequate to absorb this loss. The construction work includes re-striping, signage, and minor
sidewalk construction.
All work will be performed by Public Works Staff.
FUNDING:
Approximately $1,500 in material costs will be funded by the Transportation Improvement Fund
(#104-65000-30014) under the budgeted line item for new sidewalks.
