Mr. Chuck Rowell,
Police and Fire Commissioner
Village of North Orlando
Sir.
During the past few weeks the rash of brush and field fires
to which the North Orlando Fire Department has responded has cost
the Department in equipment losses. From our meager inve~tory of
partially servicable cloth hose, we have lost all but two lenghts
of fifty foot each. This means that we have only fifty feet of
suitable hose for each of our trucks. At present we are suppliment-
ingthis amount of double jacket hose with several lengths of
'indoor, single jacket hose. The latter is not intended for either
the pressure or the strenuous use which we must ask of it.
In short, we are now in an emergency situation because of a
lack of hose which we can rely upon. The past inventory included
several lengths of well worn, in fact ragged, hose whfu6h failed
under normal use. The remainder of the double jacket hose will
not allow for proper protection, however minimal, for the village
area. If the remaining hose is used on any fire, other than a
stucture fire or car fire, its condition will certainly deteriorate
to an unservicable status. A brush fire causes the most wear and
strain on cloth hose but remainstas the most prevelant of our fire
calls..To continue to use this cloth hose will render it useless
and render the Department inoperable.
Bearing our financial situation in mind,we are asking the
Village to help the Department. After careful study I have det-
ermined that to continue to operate, the Department must have
a rubber type fire hose, referred to as boo~r hose. We.need
a,minimum of two hundred feet, in two fifty foot and one hundred ~t1 p ~
foot lengths. This can be supplied at a cost of approximatly
$1.25 per foot, by the firm ~ which the Council has let bid Z-~~..

for the fire bunker gear..This price has been found to be most
compeditive and the firm can deliver the hose within one week.
I rAalize that this may well be an in-opportune time to
approach the council on the matter but I am sure that the urgency
of the request explains our situation. Your most sincere and
expediant consideration will be appreciated.
