Home My WebLink About2009 01 26 Consent 202 Police Expenditure Bite Suit/Patrol Rifle AssemblyCOMMISSION AGENDA ITEM 202 January, 26, 2009 MGR/DEPT Meeting 'Authorization REQUEST: The Police Department requests the Commission to approve the expenditure of $5,526.00 from Local Asset Forfeiture funds for the purchase of two (2) new K-9 unit training protective "bite suits" and one (1) replacement patrol rifle assembly. PURPOSE: The Police Department requests the Commission to approve the expenditure of $5,526.00 from Local Asset Forfeiture funds for the purchase of two (2) new K-9 unit training protective "bite suits" to replace our current suit and one (1) replacement patrol rifle assembly. CONSIDERATIONS: Since the inception of the police K-9 unit in 2002, the police department has used a full body "bite suit" to train the police dogs. This suit allows the training decoys to participate in real time scenarios with the dogs and permits the animals to bite anywhere on the body, not just on sleeves covering the arms. Over the years, the suit has taken numerous bites during training classes, weekly training days, demonstrations, and functions. As a result, the fabric which composes the protective suit is becoming compromised to the point the dogs are starting to bite through it. We desire to purchase two (2) new suits to continue a safe training environment for the officers and animals alike. The police department also uses a special operations patrol rifle for high-risk situations that may occur in our city at a moment's notice. This rifle was originally purchased in late 2006 and has reached the end of its serviceable life. Replacement of this rifle is essential to maintain the police department's ability to adequately protect our residents or visitors who may find themselves in a position to require immediate emergency service. Replacement of this rifle, bipod support device, and carry sling is approximately $2,830.00. FUNDING: Funding for the purchase of this equipment will come from Local Asset Forfeiture monies and will have no impact on the General Fund budget. As of January 5, there was a current balance of $27,376 in this fund. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the expenditure of $5,526.00 from Local Asset Forfeiture.
