REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department requests approval to conduct fall
recreation programs and classes at the Sunshine Park Civic Center and at
Trotwood Park.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this' agenda item is to allow Parks and Recreation to conduct
Fall programs and classes at the Sunshine Park Civic Center and at
Trotwood Park.
CONSIDERA TIONS:
· The Cities of Oviedo, Sanford, Lake Mary, Casselberry, Maitland and Altamonte
Springs offer programs and classes in available City buildings.
· The Winter Springs Civic Center and Trotwood Park tennis courts are available to
schedule such programs and classes.
· Programs and classes can be offered to the public by contracted instructors with them
receiving 80% of the class revenues and the City of Winter Springs receiving 20% of
the class revenues.
· Current Parks and Recreation Staff can do the promotion, fee collection and building
supervision within existing duties and budget.

. Programs and class fees will be set at $2.00 to $10.00 per class depending on instructor
qualifications, equipment provided, projected class size and number of classes offered
per program.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Parks and Recreation Department recommend City Commission approval of the Fall
Recreation Program and Classes.
IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE:
August 24, 1999 Schedule exact class dates, times, and fees.
September 1, 1999 Begin Promotion.
October 4, 1999 Program/Classes begin.

Proposed Fall Youth and Adult Programs
7 Week Program
October 4, 1999 - November 19, 1999
Location:
Winter Springs Civic Center
);> 1\fartial Arts
2 days a week (youth and adult class)
Martial art is an Asian practice that includes both karate (Chinese) and tae kwon do (Korean).
A certified instructor will introduce and teach participants the basics of martial art and
defense tactics.
~ Yoga
2 days a week (adult class)
Yoga is a relaxing exercise that enables participants to purely concentrate on the mind, body,
and soul. Elissa Maguire, a certified hatha yoga instructor, will teach and explain the
benefits of yoga.
);> Tai Chi
2 days a week (adult class)
Tai Chi offers a revitalization of the mind and body. This popular exercise strengthens the
body, increases longevity, and reduces stress. Tai Chi also increases stamina and improves
balance and coordination. Elissa Maguire, a certified instructor, will introduce, teach, and
explain to participants the benefits of tai chi.
~ Jazzercise
3 days a week (adult class)
Jazzercise is a heart-pumping, blood-racing, and moderately paced form of exercise. Joy
Sawh, a certified jazzercise instructor, will encourage participants to exercise properly,
increase their heart rate, burn calories, and build muscle.
~ Storytime
1 day a week (preschool class)
Story time will provide preschool children (under 5) the excitement and fascination of a
professional storyteller dramatizing a thirty minute tale. Mother Goose or Michael O'Rear,
professional storytellers, will set the stage for fun stories to tell the children.
>- Gymnastics
1 day a week (youth class)
Gymnastics is an exciting form of exercise that incorporates fitness and flexibility. Jackie
Williams, a certified instructor, will teach young children the basics of the gym such as
stretching and floor exercises as well as introduce equipment such as the balance beam and
trampoline.
);> Tot Tumbling
1 day a week (preschool class)
Tot Tumbling is a fun and energy exerting activity for toddlers. Jackie Williams, a certified
instructor, will teach young children how to tumble properly in an active, organized, and safe
development program.

~ Cheerleading
1 day a week (youth class)
Cheerleading is a fun sport that allows children to learn cheers, chants, jumps, and exercises.
An experienced instructor will teach young participants the basics of cheerleading.
~ Arts & Crafts
1 day a week (youth class)
Arts and Crafts offer young children the opportunity to use mental and physical skills to
construct a project of their own design. A professional instructor will show kids the steps
and directions to make a fun and interesting art or craft.
~ Ballroom Dancing
Sundays (adult class)
Ballroom dancing is an elegant, graceful, and unique form of dance. Dr, Martha Lyle, a
professional instructor, will teach adults participants the basic steps and techniques of
ballroom dance.
~ Clogging
1 day a week (youth and adult class)
Clogging is an interesting form of dance that involves endurance and talent Ed Anderson, a
professional instructor and member of The Orlando Cloggers, will teach participants the
basic steps and techniques of clogging.
? Line Dancing
1 day a week (adult class)
Line dancing is a challenging form of dance that requires synchronization and memorization.
A professional instructor will teach adult participants the basic steps and techniques of line
dancing.
Location:
Trotwood Park Tennis Courts
~ Tennis
1 day a week (youth and adult class)
Tennis is a fun sport that requires strength, agility, and hand/eye coordination. JeffBobbit, a
certified USPT instructor, will teach children between the ages of 5 through l4 and adults the
steps and techniques of tennis.

Program revenues will be used to purchase mats, mirrors and miscellaneous
equipment to enhance these programs for the public.
