REQUEST: Police Department requesting the Commission to give approval to
donate $305.71 to a joint substance abuse program in cooperation with the Seminole
County Schools, Seminole County Sheriffs Department, and six other Seminole
County Cities.
PURPOSE: To inform and seek the consent of the Commission to support a substance
abuse program for the elementary schools in cooperation with other law enforcement
agencies in Seminole County and the Seminole County Public Schools.
CONSIDERATIONS: The project is to support a substance abuse prevention
program in the Seminole County School System. Donations have been requested by
Seminole County Public Schools to share the expense of publishing a reading book and
teachers guide that is a sequel to "Mac's Choice" which is a drug prevention book. Mac's
Choice is currently being used in 32 elementary schools in Seminole County. The school
system has been able to fund a large portion of the project but has requested assistance
with the remaining portion of the cost. Our help has been requested to share in the
funding for the sequel "Caterfly, Mac's Back". Three of the schools, Highlands
Elementary, Winter Springs Elementary, and Keeth Elementary are located in our city.
The amount of the donation is $305.71. Each city in Seminole County and the Seminole
County Sheriff s Department wish to assist the schools in providing this worthwhile
program. Traditionally, this donation can be taken from the Special Law Enforcement
Fund with the approval of the Commission.
FUNDING: Existing funds from the Special Law Enforcement Fund.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the donation of$305.71 to assist in the publishing
of "Caterfly, Mac's Back".
IMPLEMENT A TION SCHEDULE:
Immediately upon approval by Commission.

Dear Chief Kerr:
The Seminole County Public Schools' Safe and Drug Free Schools Office in conjunction
with the Seminole County Sheriff's Department and Seminole Co~nty Public Health
Department is in the process of providing funding to supply every elementary school in
Seminole County with a classroom set of "Caterfly, Mac's Back" and we need your help,
"Caterfly, Mac's Back" is an elementary drug prevention supplemental reading book. This
book is a sequel to ''Mac's Choice" which is a drug prevention book that has been used in
Seminole County's elementary schools since 1992, Between the three sponsors listed
above we have supplied all but four schools with this drug prevention book. Weare
asking each municipal police department to consider funding these remaining schools
which would require a donation of$305,OO from each municipality,
With this cooperative effort all of our elementary schools will have these educational
materials. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 320-0167, We look
forward to your positive response,
