REQUEST: The Fire Department requests that the City Commission review information on
the participation at the Geneva brush fire.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission of the personnel and
equipment utilized at the Geneva brush fire.
CONSIDERATIONS:
The brush fire was first reported at 1550 Indian Cypress Trail in Geneva at 12:12 p.m. on
Saturday, June 6, 1998. Seminole County Fire Units responded and asked for assistance
immediately from surrounding Departments. Winter Springs Battalion Chief
Guglielmello was dispatched at 1 :54 p.m. and was in charge of a task force team until he
was released at 2:05 am Sunday morning. Seminole County also requested Winter
Springs Engine 124, which carries 1300 gallons of water to respond. Engine 124 was
staffed with Lieutenant Schneider and Firefighter Keene. They worked from 1 :36 p.m.
Saturday afternoon till 12:36 am Sunday morning completing fire suppression activities.
Battalion Chief Forrest was called at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday to cover the position of
Battalion Chief for Winter Springs and the South end of the County. B/C Forrest
remained in Winter Springs until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday when he was requested to report
to the Command Post in Geneva. B/C Forrest worked in the Command Post until 2:00 am
Sunday morning and then was re-assigned as Division Commander of the East Division
commanding as many as 6 task forces. B/C Forrest remained on the scene until relieved at
8:30 am on Sunday.
During the fire, Wi:nter Springs Fire Department personnel were faced with extreme fire
conditions and were in heavy smoke the entire time they were on the scene. None of our
personnel have ever experienced a fire of this magnitude in their entire career. Car 8, the
4 X 4 Chevrolet Suburban that our Battalion Chiefs drive had to pull out many stuck
vehicles with its winch, saving them from the fire along with assisting people out of the
area. Needless to say our engine and crew saved many homes from the fire even though
