REQUEST: The Pal'ks and Recreation Department wishes to advise the Commission that
it has b(~n recommended by the City Manager that the summer recreation
program at Sunshine Park be canceled.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to notify the Commission of our desire to cancel
the summer recreation program at Sunshine Park.
CONSIDERA TIONS:
. The program was set up to serve 70 youth each week for six (6) weeks and to
be held at Sunshine Park/Civic Center.
. Advertisement was presented in the local newspaper; flyers were distributed
to all eligible students two weeks prior to school closing and utility billing
information included this camp. All together these efforts did not elicit a
good r~:ponse. Only six youth have been registered to date.
. There alre three kinds of day care programs such as we have offered
availablle in addition to ours, i.e., City of Oviedo, Private day care centers
and the Seminole County Public Schools.
CONCLUSIONS:
. Oviedo llilled their program of 80 youth per week for 8 weeks immediately
with all residents (no non-residents) enrollment. Their fee is $60.00 per week
per panicipant. Our fee was $80.00 per week. Oviedo has a full community

.. center, gymnasium, craft rooms and a swimming pool under their direct
supervi!iion. Therefore their fee of $60.00 includes all swimming at no direct
cost to the user. Cost for only the swimming (including transportation) to us
exceeds $20.00 per participant per week.
.. Private day care centers such as the one on Red Bug Road is not full any
week this summer. Cost there is $85.00 per week.
. The Sel1llinole County School Board offers this program at two (2) locations;
Red Bug Elementary School and Rainbow Elementary School. Cost per week
is $90.00 per student. (Cost of transportation for them is driver's pay only
or less than half of what we would pay transportation for use of their buses).
The average weekly registration for these programs is 60 participants per
location. The capacity is 120 students per week per location.

RECOMMENDATION:
The Par'ks and Recreation Department requests that the Commission accept
the City. Manager's recommendation to cancel the summer recreation day
camp program for lack of registrations.
