REQUEST: The Fire Department requests that the City Commission review the information
relative to the Range Queen Stove-Top Fire Stopper.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission of the information
gathered by the Fire Department to respond to the inquiry by Commissioner
Cindy Gennell.
CONSIDERATIONS:
. Commissioner Cindy Gennell, during the Regular Meeting of the City Commission, Monday,
April 13, 1998, under VI., Reports, Item D., Commission Seat IV, Commissioner Gennell
said she had heard of a device that is placed under a stove hood and ifthere is a fire it
automatically opens and emits a powder to put out a fire. Commissioner Gennell said there is
a City's Fire Department that is giving away these devices and asked the City Manager to
have the Fire Chief took into this. Commissioner Gelmell mentioned that the City that is
giving away the devices she spoke about was the City of Casselberry.
The Fire Chief contacted the City of Casselberry Fire Department and inquired about the
device and was provided the following information by Renzie Davidson, Fire Investigator,
Casselberry Fire Department. The Casselberry Fire Department has started a program
making available to purchase a device named the "RANGE QUEEN" a stove-top fire
stopper. This device that is installed under a range hood with a magnet is heat activated,
which in turn sound!; an alarm, and expels powder from the device to the stove-top
extinguishing the fire. It requires one (1) Range Queen device per two (2) burners, so a

typical stove-top would require two (2) Range Queens. These Range Queen devices are not
currently available to the general public and must be purchased directly from the vendor.
The cost of one (1) Range Queen is $16.00 and a typical stove-top with two (2) devices
would cost the consumer $32.00.
The City of Casselberry Fire Department did get a $2,500.00 grant from the Allstate
Insurance Company that has a regional office in Casselberry for the purchase of the Range
Queens. However, these units may only be installed for individuals who meet certain criteria
determined by the Casselberry Fire Department.
. On April 27, 1998, Informational Item "A" was presented to the City Commission to provide
limited information on the subject of the Range Queen Stove-top Fire Stopper manufactured
by Pyro Control, Inc..
. Since the Apn127, 1998, City Commission Meeting, the Fire Department has gathered the
following information and desires to make a recommendation based upon the findings.
The company that manufactures the Range Queen is only interested in setting up distributors
for their device if a purchase of 10,000 units or more is completed with total payment due at
time of sale. The Fire Department or the general public can purchase whatever amount of the
devices at the following break-out pricing direct from the manufacturer. The manufacturer
does not have any local retailers who carry the Range Queen at this time, but is seeking
potential distributor::;.
1 - 24 units $24.95 each
25 - 1,007 units $16.50 each
1,008 - 10,000 units $13.75 each
10,001 + units $12.50 each
. The Fire Department has also contacted local insurance companies and inquired about grants
for purchases of the devices. All insurance companies contacted have denied our request for
a grant but continue to offer fire safety education materials that the Fire Department does
utilize as a resource.
