TITLE: Police Department informing the Commission of the approval of a Bureau of
Justice Assistance Block Grant.
PURPOSE: To provide information to the Commission regarding the Police Department's
approval for a Bureau of Justice Assistance Block Grant, to be used for Crime Prevention
Projects in the Department's Community Relations Section.
CONSIDERATIONS: At the City Commission meeting August 25, 1997 the Commission
authorized the Police Department's application for a United States Bureau of Justice Assistance
Block Grant (Ref Consent Agenda Item "G"- 08/25/97) On October 1, 1997 the Police
Department was advised that the grant had been awarded in the amount of $20,943.00, to be
utilized for Crime Prevention Projects in the Community Relations Section of the Police
Department. A required matching contribution of $2,327.00 will be provided from the Police
Department's 1997-98 Budget from the Promotional Activities line code.
The Bureau of Justice Assistance will be forwarding an information packet to the City which
will allow the Finance Director to establish a special account with the matching contribution.
Once this is accomplished, and the information is returned to the Bureau of Justice Assistance,
the grant award check will be sent to the City.
The money expended from the account will be administered by the Police Department, and may
only be used for Crime Prevention Projects as stated in the grant application. Those projects
included :
. development of an effective Neighborhood Watch program
. training and equipment to establish a Bicycle Patrol Force
. training and equipment for a Youth Resources Officer
. Personal Safety classes for women and Senior Citizens
