REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department is requesting the Commission to
consider information received from "The Compassionate Friends-Orlando
Chapter" who are offering to donate a park bench(s) to the City for
installation at Central Winds Park.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to provide adequate information to the Commission so
that they can determine the appropriateness of accepting the proposed donated
benches.
CONSIDERATIONS:
*
The Parks and Recreation Director met with Mr. Glickman who was
representing "The Compassionate Friends-Orlando Chapter". Mr.
Glickman stated that he was associated with the Compassionate Friends,
which is an organization which serves to meet with, council and assist
parents that have a deceased child.
*
The Compassionate Friends organization meets twice each month and
there are no religious affiliations. The group is supported solely through
donations. Please see Attachment #l-Brochure/Flyer.
*
The Compassionate Friends are offering to donate and install one or more
park benches to the City of Winter Springs and locate them in passive
areas at Central Winds Park. The location(s) would be mutually agreed
upon with the City and the organization representative.
*
The bench(s) is/are proposed to be granite or marble in composition,
approximately five (5') feet long and would have deceased children's

*
The bench(s) would be constructed or purchased through donations
received or made by the organization. The bench(s) is/are valued at
$2,000.00 each.
ISSUE ANALYSIS:
*
The acceptance of the bench(s) will involve no cost or staff time to the
City with the exception of staff time expended making initial location
considerations and maintaining the areas around the bench(s).
*
Should the bench(s) be accepted for placement we envision no issues
relative to their presence as long as the quantity of placements is held to
three (3) or four (4).
FUNDING:
None associated with the donation acceptance.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Parks and Recreation Department recommends that the City Commission
give favorable consideration to the acceptance and installation of one (I) to four
(4) bench(s) from The Compassionate Friends-Orlando Chapter.
IMPLEMENT A TION SCHEDULE:
Upon approval from the Commission for acceptance of the benches) the Parks and
Recreation Department will meet with The Compassionate Friends representative
to select future installation locations. Bench(s) could be placed at any time
thereafter.
