HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996 04 22 Regular Item F COMMISSION ITEM ITEM F REGULAR X CONSENT INFORMATIONAL April 22,1996 Meeting MGR /lw""" IDEPT Authorization REQUEST: The City Manager requesting the Commission to consider authorizing City Staff to participate in the Kenny Rogers Roasters "Love Your Neighbor" Rib-A- Thon Day Event for Charity, to approve a Proclamation proclaiming May 4, 1996 Kenny Rogers Roasters "Love Your Neighbor" Rib-A- Thon Day, and designate the charity to receive the meal donations from Kenny Rogers Roasters Restaurant. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Agenda Item is to have the Commission consider authorizing City Staff to participate in the above referenced event, to approve a proclamation memorializing the event, and to designate the charity to receive the meal donations from the sponsor. CONSIDERATIONS: The Rib-A-Thon is an annual event sponsored by Kenny Rogers Roasters Restaurant for charity. In this event, organizations send 5 member teams to participate in rib eating contests. The winning teams win meals which are donated to the charity of choice. The Commission will need to establish the charity to which they would like the meals donated, if the City's teams win. Charities that have been mentioned are Meals on Wheels, local churches and the Grove Counseling Center " The City is prepared to place an awesome team of gastronomical experts in the Contest as follows: Police Department Glenn Tolleson Gary Nelson Michael Noland Kevin Brunelle Robert Munshower Fire Department Henry Schneider Keith Guglielmello John Quinteros James Reilley Kevin Sims Public Worlcs/Recreation Department Nate Williams Sammy Wiggs Robert Carriere Chris Lassitter Luke Gray FUNDING: There is no cost for this item IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: May 4, 1996 RECOMMENDATION: 1) Authorize the City Staff to participate in the Kenny Rogers Roaster "Love Your Neighbor" Rib-A- Thon. 2) Approve and read into the Public Record the Proclamation memorializing the event. 3) Designate the charity the Commission wishes to receive meal donations that might be won by the City's participating teams. This program is taking place nationwide, focusing positive attention on our communities' support agencies, schools, fire fighters and police officers. The purpose of the event is to raise money and awareness for local charities, and for other public service benefits. Kenny Rogers Roasters is happy to support and encourage community togetherness by recognizing these groups whose hard work and community dedication at times seem to go unnoticed and unrewarded. Here are a few key points concerning the RIB-A-THON. Kenny Rogers Roasters will host local community organizations to compete in a variety of fun contests. Each organization will have a team of five participants. There will be several rounds of contests, so that more organizations can participate. Most will involve eating ribs, but at least one event will not. Winners will receive 25 catered meals, runners-up will receive 10 catered meals. Each team will either be a winner or a runner-up. The meals may be used in any way the organization determines. They may be used for fund-raisers, premiums, volunteer appreciation dinners, or any other way. The event will be hosted by Randy Rogers, who is Kenny's brother as well as Vice President and Corporate Spokesperson. Please send me the names of your team's five participants. Once we have a confirmed list of participating organizations, flyers and coupons will be distributed in the surrounding community. I will send them to you as well. Feel free to distribute them throughout your organization. Additionally, invitations to the press and special guests will be sent out prior to the event. Please send me at your earliest opportunity a list of guests and media representatives whom you would like to include. We are still seeking additional participants and corporate sponsors. Any leads that you could provide would certainly be appreciated. Also, I am attaching a draft of a proposed proclamation. TEAM parrW'!El!] APR 1 5 1996 ,< CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS City Manager 29-96 DA TE: 04/15/96 It is with a great sense of pride and pleasure (and with deepest sympathy to Chief Lallathin and the Fire Dept.) that I announce the members of the Police Dept.'s team for the upcoming "Rib-a-thon" at Kenny Roger's restaurant on May 4, 1996. Individually these members can best be described as "dangerous eaters". (It is recommended that all spectators, as well as other contestants, keep hands, jewelry and any articles of loose clothing away from their mouths during the competition.) Collectively, this team of rib-eating-maniacs has been responsible for driving up the wholesale prices for ribs by increasing the demand, due to their personal reduction of the available supply. The members of the Winter Springs Police Department Rib-A-Thon Team are: THE RIB 'RANGLERS Glenn "the Tarantula" Tolleson - so named because he eats so fast it looks like he must have eight arms. Gary "the Gobbler" Nelson - don't be fooled by the name...he's no "turkey", The hunger-rumbles from his stomach once caused the National Weather Service to issue severe thunder storm warnings by mistake. Michael E. "Mikey" Noland -let "Mikey" eat it..he'll eat anything...and everything! After the contest is over, he'll be happy for days, just curling up and gnawing on the bones. Kevin "the Dispos-all" Brunelle - pass the sauce, and then get out of his way! Can consume the entire gross food production of a small country as a bed-time snack. Robert "MUNCH" Munshower - single-handedly responsible for putting an "all- you-can-eat" buffet restaurants out of business during his lunch break...on three separate occasions. Let the games begin!
