HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 551 School Speed Zone RESOLUTION NO. 551 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF w"'IN'I'&~ SPRINGS, FlDRIDA, REQUESTING THE FlDRIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRA.T\fSPORTATION 1D ERECT A SCHOOL SPEED ZONE IN FRONT OF \.JINTER SPRINGS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON S. R. 434 IN WINTER SPRINGS, FlDRIDA. WHEREAS the Winter Springs Elementary School is on State Road 434 in Winter Springs which is a very heavily traveled road, and WHEREAS concerned parents, teachers and guardians have requested the Florida Department of Transportation to erect a school speed zone in front of the Winter Springs Elementary School for the safety of our children, and WHEREAS these concerned citizens are requesting a school speed zone be implemented with a flashing light lowering the limit to 20 mph in the morning when children are arriving and in the aftenoons when the children are leaving, and WHEREAS State Road 434 is a State Road and the speed limit is 45 mph, and the traffic light is now at a four-way intersection; children must walk across four lanes of heavy traffic, and WHEREAS, elementary age children walk along a sidewalk located within 3 or 4 feet of S. R. 434 for the entire length of the school zone, and WHEREAS the City Comnission is very concemed for the safety, health and welfare of the citizens of vlinter Springs. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA: SECTION I - Strongly urge the Florida Department of Transportation to erect a school speed zone in front of the Winter Springs Elementary School on State Road 434 in Winter Springs as soon as possible for the safety of the children. SECTION II - Request a school speed zone with a flashing light lowering the limit to 20 mph in the morning when children are arriving and in the afternoon when children are leaving the school be erected. SECTION III. - Requests this speed zone for the safety of the children before there is a tragic accident. SECTION IV - Requests the Florida Department of Transportation to formulate standards and regulations which provide adequate provision for the safety of those children who are not yet old enough to comprehend the danger of a situation such as exists in the vicinity of Winter Springs Elementary School. RESOLUTION NO. 551 PAGE TWO SECTION V - All resolutions, or parts of resolutions in conflict with this resolution are hereby repealed. Passed and adopted this 24th day of November, 1986.
