, - t , ,, Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a neurological disorder affecting one in every 3,000 children born, more than lRouD
Americans total; is more prevalent than Cystic Fibrosis, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and Huntington's Disease
combined; and
k,_S? NF causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and also can
affect development of the brain, cardiovascular System, bones and skin; and affects people of all races and ethnic
origins, and both sexes equally; and
NF can lead to the loss of sight or hearing; skeletal defects such
as abnormal curvature of the spine or bowing of the leg; learning disabilities; disfigurement; chronic pain;
cardiovascular problems, including high blood pressure, cancer, and a wide variety of other complications; and
The Children's Tumor Foundation leads efforts to promote and financially sponsor world-class medical research
aimed at finding effective treatments and, ultimately a cure For NF; works to improve access to quality patient
healthcare through its national NF Clinic Network; and
The Children's Tumor Foundation provides patient and family support through its information resources, youtl
programs, and local chapter activities - and as much remains to be done in raising public awareness of NF to hel[:
promote early diagnosis, proper management and treatment, prevention of complications, and support for
research - the Children's Tumor Foundation is observing May as National Neurofibromatosis (NF) Awareness Montl-
