State Road 434 Winter Springs, FL 32708 Dear Mayor Kulbes: Few communities have the will and compassion to confront serious problems as directly as Central Florida. For years, Central Florida has taken pride in a "can-do" spirit that kindles awareness and action from the volunteer, corporate and government sectors -- no matter how challenging the issue. In November, the month observed allover the nation as National Diabetes Month, the American Diabetes Association Central Florida Region plans to focus this civic pride and problem solving spirit on one of the most serious problems ever: diabetes. As you may know, diabetes is incurable and the fourth leading cause of death by disease in the United States. An estimated 14 million Americans have diabetes, including 60,000 individuals in Central Florida. We would like very much to count on your help during our observation of National Diabetes Month. This national effort, combining support from volunteers, the media, businesses and human service agencies, will include activities on two fronts: action toward a cure, and outreach to the estimated seven million Americans who will not know they have diabetes until they have lost their vision, have a leg or foot amputated, have heart disease, or are confronted with any number of diabetes' other serious complications. Both depend on the community's awareness of diabetes' seriousness and irr~act. To help generate that awareness, we are asking that you proclaim November as National Diabetes Month in Winter Springs. A sample proclamation is enclosed, and we would of course be happy to answer any questions you may have about diabetes or the American Diabetes Association. Thank you for helping to enlighten and educate the residents of Winter Springs and the rest of Central Florida about this very serious disease. /M<f- yo;;;.. --r& 0 --jO rj..,~~ Sincerely, C!;JA{J(I (1.
