PROCLAMATION
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION WEEK
\~EREAS, children are our most valuable resource and their health and
well-being are everyone's concern; and
WHEREAS, since 1974 reports of child abuse and neglect have increased 147
percent nationwide while reports of abuse and neglect in Florida have increased
192 percent in the same period; and
WHEREAS, in 1982-83 more than 84,000 reports of child abuse and neglect were
received in the state of Florida, including more than 7500 reports in Orange,
Osceola and Seminole counties alone; and
WHEREAS, in 1982 the Florida Legislature decreed the prevention of child abuse
and neglect to be a priority of the state; and
WHEREAS, national studies on prison populations indicate that 80 to 90 percent
of the inmates had been abused as children; and
WHEREAS, WINTER SPRINGS wishes to support the campaign of the Greater
Orlando Crime Prevention Association to stop the crime of child abuse, and to
enhance the public awareness of this problem and encourage people to report any
knowledge of child abuse;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA, that
the week of April 2-8, 1984, is proclaimed as Child Abuse Prevention Week in
the City of Winter Springs/County of Seminole, and all citizens thereof are
urged to become aware of this serious problem and to join in the prevention of
child abuse and neglect by supporting this effort.
